清洁度检测是一项悠久的产品质量指标，主要是指零件或产品表面污染物的种类、形状、尺寸和数量等。只要通过对缺陷案例的观测和分析，就清楚的看到清洁度对于产品质量的影响，例如在发动机异响的处理过程中，可以发现异响是由于细小的铝屑颗粒混杂在配合面之间而造成的.在汽车发动机的制造过程中，发动机零件清洁度的劳动量约占到整个发动力生产过程中10~20%的劳动量。

据VDA-19的描述，弱化/避开小颗粒测试时近来的发展趋势，对于许多实际案例，5-50μm是没有相关性的，并且对那么小的颗粒进行分析甚至是一种工作的阻碍，因为对那么小的颗粒进行分析工作量很大。因此，现在已将颗粒大于50μm的颗粒分析作为标准化。而只有少数的特殊案例需要分析颗粒小于50μm的。
